Why Use Tweezers For Electronics & Beyond?

Tweezers are hand tools that allow the operator to grab, handle or hold small to miniature objects (such as electronic components) that cannot be handled by hand.

They are designed to sit comfortably between your forefinger and thumb for optimal control and precision.

Often in electronic manufacturing settings, tweezers are used for either repair works on PCBs or for handling miniature components, where a fine pointed tweezer will be needed. With PCBs becoming increasingly small and crowded, tweezers provide the perfect production aid for handling such tasks with care and precision.

Features Required For Tweezers

Non-Magnetic

If your tweezer is not non-magnetic (or Anti-magnetic), over time it will begin to become slightly magnetic in nature. This can often occur through touching magnetised items or from passing the tweezers through other magnetic fields. Tweezers that are labeled as non-magnetic, prevent this from occurring.

Varying Tweezer Types

Tweezers can be purchased in varying shapes and sizes, all catering to unique purposes. Below are the types of tweezers and a rough summary of their target purpose:

Bent/Curved – Provide the user with a better viewing angle of their application. They are curved at the tip for easier control and accuracy.

Blunt – A tweezer designed for applications requiring finesse. Often pointed tip tweezers can be too sharp-edged for some components, resulting in damage. The finely curved tip of blunt tweezers helps to prevent this.

Cutting – These tweezers provide greater cutting accuracy for wires on crowded PCBs. The sharp edge allows the user to cut softer wires.

Flat – The surface area on the edge of flat tweezers is larger than your standard tweezer. This makes them perfect for picking up larger objects with precision.

Pointed – The narrow edge of these tweezers makes them perfect for handling components or objects that are in hard-to-reach locations.

Round – General purpose tweezers that are suitable for most applications. Often these will be used where the task does not require complete precision.

Wafer – The tips are flat, which allows for the safe handling of silicon wafers (in the manufacturing of semiconductors) without causing damage.

Perfect For Many Applications

Tweezers are a versatile hand tool that can translate across many different applications. They are essential, especially where the small and highly detailed work is being carried out. You will find tweezers in many different industries including:

  • Electronic manufacturing
  • Lab environments
  • Medical settings
  • Watch manufacture & repair work
  • Beauty treatments
  • Jewellery making
  • Home DIY work

ESD Coating

Keep an eye out for some of the tweezers that are marked as ESD safe. These tweezers carry an additional ESD coating that provides further versatility and safety when working with either static sensitive devices or components. For ESD safe tweezers select CK Tools in the Brands filter.
