When soldering or desoldering, preheating your PCBs and components offer three main benefits:

Better Activation – Preheating your PCB helps to better activate the flux. It does this by removing films and flux oxide. By doing this, you enhance the wetting process, leaving you with a more solid solder connection.

Less Thermal Shock – When a PCB heats up rapidly in a short space of time, it can lead to thermal shock, causing failure in both the board and components. By preheating your PCBs, you get the board below the point of soldering temperatures and avoid sudden jumps in temperature that can warp your PCBs.

Reduced Molten Solder – Ensuring that the PCB is sufficiently preheated reduces risk of exposure to molten solder on your PCB. This in turn minimises the possible damage that can occur to surrounding components.
