What Are Downdraught Benches?

Traditional fume extraction units often extract the air upwards from the source. Often, you will have seen images of fumes being extracted in a vertical stream, up through a nozzle or hose close to the application.

A downdraught bench (or downflow bench) extracts the air downwards into the bench - which has built-in filtration systems to remove harmful particles.

Therefore, this offers an effective way of catching harmful airborne contaminants.

How Do Downdraught Benches Work?

A downdraught bench is a common alternative to extraction through an extension arm. Firstly, downdraught benches have large capture zones, capturing more of the contaminants from the air at once. The bench will draw the dust or fume particles downwards, ensuring that contaminants are drawn away from the operator. This air is then filtered and recirculated, often through the bottom of the unit.

Operation & Benefits Of Downdraught Benches

  • Work on or above the surface
  • On / Off switch - some units include optional speed controllers
  • Perforated benchtop - enables dust and fumes to be easily extracted
  • Variety of filters to match your unit and extraction needs
  • Clear air exhausted downwards at the bottom of the unit (or optionally into ducting)
  • Pressure gauge to easily indicate the filter condition
