What is an Ioniser?

When working with printed circuit boards (PCB) or other electronic assembly equipment, ensuring that you eliminate electrostatic discharge (ESD) along with particle contamination is essential. Both factors can cause serious damage to electronic components on the assembly line.

Ionisers are a way of protecting your production line process, including PCB manufacturing, SMDs, and much more. The ionisation equipment we offer helps to make the atmosphere both healthier and less prone to ESD.

The way that the ionisers do this is by sending out both positive and negative ions into the atmosphere. These particles will then attach to oppositely charged particles in either the air or atop of a surface. This neutralises the built-up static electricity on any surfaces or equipment.

Why You Need To Use Ionisation Equipment?
There are two main reasons that you should use ioniser equipment in your workplace. These are:

Reduce Air Pollution – Negative ions have been proven to help clear dust, pollen and even mould spores from the nearby atmosphere in your workspace.

How Do Ionisers Work?
The ionisers work by flooding the atmosphere inside your room, with both positive and negative ions. These ions are then attracted to the opposite polarity of ions on a charged surface. Benchtop – Workstation space is a valuable commodity, but these benchtop ionisers provide a compact and direct option for ionisation at your workbench. These are a fast and targeted way to neutralise the static charge at your workstation, doing a great job neutralising the table, tools, and equipment.

Overhead – Where workspace cannot be freed for a benchtop ioniser, you can suspend them above your workspace with an overhead ioniser. They are used to shower ions into the room. These units are ideal for electronic assembly and life sciences work.

Air Guns – These are a more focused type of ioniser. These are ideal for point of use ionisation, helping to dislodge contamination through the use of the compressed air ionisers.

Some Frequent Questions About Ionisers

Does Ionisation Purify The Air?
Whilst ionisation will filter the air from contaminants, they are not completely removed from the room. They are simply deposited onto a nearby surface. This is often why you will notice a black ring around the ioniser once it is moved. What Type Of Ionisation Will My Application Require?
To determine the most optimal ionising equipment for your application there are a few questions that you should consider:

Budget – Ionisers are an investment; it must be said. Generally, the higher the price, the increase in features or strength. Likely the size of your budget is going to be one of the first determining factors in your ioniser.

Type Of Application – As mentioned above, the application that you are undertaking will hold significant bearing as to the ioniser unit that you invest in. If workspace is of limited availability for example, an overhead unit would be a greater fit. Consider all factors in your work environment before making your final purchase.
